Cyanides & Their Effect on the Human Body

Cyanides are chemical compounds containing the monovalent group CN. They are fast-acting poisons. It has a “bitter almond” smell and can be found in the form of a liquid, a colourless gas or a crystal. Cyanide is used to manufacture pesticides and plastics. They were used as chemical weapons in World I for the first time.
It can be produced by certain bacteria and fungi. It is also found in cigarette smoke and emissions of vehicles. Some amount of cyanide can also be found in some foods.
So how does cyanide affect the human body?
Cyanide is most harmful to our brain, nerves and heart. It can:
Slow down your breathing and heart rate
Make you lose consciousness
Cause Nausea
Make your eyes tear
Cause lung injuries
Cause seizures
Extreme conditions
Death
What should a person do when they are exposed to cyanide?
Immediately get away from the area which is contaminated with cyanide. Try to find fresh air.
Remove any clothing or accessories that may have cyanide.
Quickly clean yourself using soap and water.
If your eyes are tearing up, wash them in lukewarm water for 5-10 minutes.
If you are facing any breathing difficulties or health problems, immediately seek medical help.
In conclusion, cyanide is lethal to the human body. It can have serious impacts on our health. Therefore, It is important to be careful while dealing with chemicals like cyanide.
