Responsibly Using AI: How is the World Controlling AI Usage?

As AI advances, policy and ethics are needed to keep AI usage proper. Nation and industry leaders are creating legislation to ensure powerful AI systems are properly used.

For example, the European Union’s AI Act, adopted in 2024, has recently been tightened. “Unacceptable risk” applications such as biometric surveillance and social scoring with AI have been banned as of February 2nd, 2025. They plan to implement the act in phases, where august 2nd of 2025 further enforcement on GPAI (General Purpose AI), affecting “high-risk” systems, such as biometric identification, infrastructure safety, education, and more. The EU appears to distrust using AI so regularly, and plans to implement rules that prevent AI from becoming integrated in daily life. This is likely due to certain inaccurate information AI might give, which is not desirable for educational purposes.

In the US, different approaches are being taken. The approach seems to be lighter, but focuses on risk management. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework gives guidance on identifying bias, and securing AI models from attacks. AI has been previously known for having certain biases, and being prone to attacks on models. Attacks include AI systems being tricked or manipulated, such as data poisoning. Data poisoning includes malicious data being added to the AI’s set information to corrupt its behaviour. This affects its reliability, as certain false information could be seen as true to the AI model.

It appears that since AI’s sudden surge in popularity, humanity is steering it to become a trustable source, usable in many contexts. Responsible use of AI has become an expectation, and the future of AI may even depend more on its ethical boundaries than its technological capabilities.
